We have a major project that we hope you will feel you would like to help with even if you do not wish to become a water witch.
We are trying tp get all the wells, ponds, wholly wells spas, springs and the like back to a state where they contain clean, sweet water, as they did when in more use many years ago.
Many times today you will come across water that is stagnant, green, smells terrible, has great green slime everywhere, and well let us say that you would not want to put a hand in it let alone drink or bath in it.
Historically wells and streams had to have clean wholesome drinking water and water that both humans and animals could use, while today many are being filled in as they are no longer an amenity.
This can be recovered, saved and many can become again popular meeting places and nice places to go. We will explain how.
In the past there were many routines carried out, initially pagan, and country crafts, but some like well dressing taken over by other religions.
Most of these have as their basis either a corn man, corn dolly or some sort of dressing ritual where barley straw or similar is used.
Ok, they murmured the magic words in one religion or another and the well or pond cleaned itself up and become a pleasure to have.
Like so many of the pagan and country remedies science now agrees that this is the solution and provides an explanation as to why it works. The solution is now widely used by people with garden fish ponds and the like and aquatic suppliers sell a range of material based on this old method that ca be obtained cheaply. Alternatively barley straw obtained from a farmer is just as good.
So what do we want you to do.
1. If at all possible without falling in, remove the worst of any weed or debris that you can see.
2 Add some barley straw, pad, pellets or solution to the water, and repeat 2 or 3 times a year.
You will find you can get the pad, pellets or solution from any place that sells items for treating fish ponds.
If you come across a larger problem such as a village pond covered in green slime then you will need to find out on who's land it is to get permission to correct it, and then visit a local farmer and get hold of a bale or two of barley straw you can throw well away from the edges where children may be attempted to try and climb on to it.
The amount of barley straw that is needed in part depends on the oxygenation level, so if there is water falling in, or a fountain, try to put the material you add near to this. However it will work, just a little slower if it has no oxygenation.
If you use a pad, or a part of a bale it may float to start, but will sink eventually, it does not mater if it sinks or floats, its the rotting effect and chemicals that are released that makes the water unsuitable for the algae and cleans it up.
It will take a few weeks to start showing an effect of any great extent but the action will then be quite rapid.
It is preferable that you take responsibility for one place or a small number that you look after regularly then trying to blitze everywhere irregularly.
